Pastor Breonus M. Mitchell, Sr.was called to serve as the 13th Pastor of Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church in Nashville, TN on April 3, 2016. Prior, he was the Founding Pastor of the Greater Grace Temple Community Church serving that congregation from 1997 – 2016. He also pastored the Boyce Street Baptist Church in Nashville, TN from 1994 – 1997.
Pastor Mitchell was born April 6, 1973 to Delores Mitchell. He has a twin brother, Cleonus Mitchell; three sisters Jenell Butler, Cheryl Hardy, and LaJessie Fletcher. Pastor Mitchell was married to the late Lakisha Fitzgerald Mitchell for seventeen years. To that union two sons were born, Breonus Monta Mitchell Jr (BJ) and Brennon Michael Mitchell.
Pastor Mitchell came to know the Lord and express his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized by Reverend Richard D. Hunt at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Nashville, TN. He accepted his call to preach on August 4, 1991 and preached his first sermon, ‘What a Mighty God We Serve’from Exodus 3:1-18 on September 1, 1991 at Watson Grove Missionary Baptist Church Nashville, TN under the pastorate of Reverend Curtis W. Goodwin. He was ordained on January 15, 1995 at Watson Grove Missionary Baptist Church by Reverend Curtis Goodwin, Sr.
Pastor Mitchell graduated a Distinguished Scholar from Donelson Christian Academy. He continued his education at American Baptist College, in which he received his Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Studies. He has studied at The Marshall Center for Christian Ministry of Georgetown, KY and Regents Park College of Oxford University receiving a certificate in Textual Exegesis, Hermeneutics and Homiletics. He received his Master of Theological Studies with a concentration in New Testament Theology and Preaching from Hazelip School of Theology – Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN.
Pastor Mitchellhas commitments to various religious, social, civil, and political identities. He is a subscribing lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Color People. He is a member of the Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship of Middle TN; National Baptist Convention of America, serving as the Assistant Recording Secretary for the Evangelical Board of the National Baptist Convention of America; and TN Supreme Court Access to Justice Faith-Based Committee. He is a past board member of the Middle Tennessee Regional Advisory Committee for HIV Awareness; The Oasis Center of Nashville, TN; and the TN Prison for Women Community Resource Board. He is the former commissioner for the Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County Parking and Traffic Commission (2008-2018). Pastor Mitchell currently serves as a Board Member for 4:13 Strong, and Fifty Forward of Bordeaux. He also serves as Board Chair for Faith Leaders United. Pastor Mitchell has recently been appointed as the National Alumni President of American Baptist College and the Board of Trustees for American Baptist College and Donelson Christian Academy.
Pastor Mitchell serves as the Founder & President of: Breonus Mitchell Ministries, Inc. He is a member of Prince Hall Lodge No. 1, Mt. Sinai Chapter 135 Holy Royal Arch Mason, Mt. Ararat Council No. 5 Royal & Select Masters, Apollo No. 1 Knights Templar and J. A. Henry Consistory No. 48 all in Nashville, TN.
Pastor Mitchell is the author of A Fish Called Mercy.
Pastor Mitchell is a gifted pastor and preacher. His exegetical integrity, homiletic skills, and hermeneutical sincerity have privileged him to preach throughout the United States and in the Bahamian Islands. He has appeared on The Greg Davis Show (Impact Network), The Empowerment Encounter with Dr. Jamal Harrison-Bryant (The Word Network) and The Word Network’s Seven Last Words of Christ. He has preached for NBCUSA, Inc., NBCA International, Inc. and Lifeway’s Black Church Week for the Southern Baptist Convention.
Pastor Mitchell married the former Jacquita Shantae Haynes of Murfreesboro, TN on August 18, 2018.
